CBD 101 PRESENTED BY MYREMEDE

PEITI FENG - CMO OF MYREMEDE

CBD is everywhere. In coffee, baked goods, capsules, tinctures, dog treats, and hair pomade. It has officially become every product's new favorite collab. But when it comes down to it, what is CBD? How much should you take? Why choose one form over another? My hope today is to give you a quick and easy breakdown of how to start your CBD journey.

How To Take It:

If you've already looked into CBD oil, you know that there’s no one best way to take it. Rather, there are a number of ways in which you can take CBD oil, each with its unique purpose and absorption method. For example, the body absorbs CBD capsules differently than it does tinctures — a difference that can also alter how quickly you feel an effect.

Sublingual - The most direct way to take CBD oil is under the tongue in tinctures, sprays, lozenges, and other sublingual products.

Topical - Instead of ingesting it into your body as you would something like CBD capsules, you apply topical CBD oil right onto your skin. Topical CBD typically takes the form of CBD-infused moisturizers, balms, lotions, patches, creams, gels, and other skin products you might see at a cosmetics store.

Edible - The term “edibles” usually refers to CBD-containing food, but it can also mean other edible products like capsules. Regardless, edible CBD products are ideal for people who still want fast delivery but don’t want to taste their CBD.

Vaping and Smoking - The quickest way to absorb CBD into your body is by smoking or vaping it. Through these methods, you can expect CBD to enter your bloodstream and elicit an effect in as quickly as 10 minutes or less (but usually closer to 10 - 15 minutes).

Proper Dosage:
Even if you accidentally overshoot your CBD dosage, serious side effects are exceptionally rare. In fact, a study in 2011 found that even large doses of 1,500 mg a day (most products recommend starting with just 10 mg a day) could be taken regularly with little to no side effects.

Finding the Right CBD Dosage

The right CBD dosage depends on a number of personal factors, including:

  • body weight
  • what you’re trying to accomplish with CBD oil
  • your specific body chemistry

Therefore, you should first consult your doctor for a personalized dosage recommendation. If for whatever reason you can’t get a recommendation from your doctor, the next safest thing to do is start with as small as possible and gradually bump up your dosage (by approximately 5 mg) over time. It's also important to remember that everyone reacts to CBD differently, so you'll need to consistently take a product for 2-4 weeks to get an accurate sense of how it's working for you.

Possible Side Effects (usually when you first start using CBD):

  • fatigue
  • diarrhea
  • changes in appetite
  • changes in weight

How You Take Your CBD Oil:

When trying to choose the CBD oil product, it’s essential to include “working time” as a main deciding factor. Without knowing how long a specific CBD product will take to start working inside your body, you risk buying one that doesn’t cater to your specific needs.

One of the biggest factors in how long it takes for CBD oil to work inside your body is the method in which you consume it. While more methods of consumption seem to pop up every day, the four main ways to consume CBD oil include:

  • Applying under your tongue : 15-45 min
  • Applying to your skin: 45 - 60 min
  • Eating: Up to 2 hours
  • Inhaling: 15 - 30 min

Quality: To ensure that you only end up with the highest quality CBD oil available, look for CBD products that come paired with a Certificate of Analysis (COA) from an accredited lab. A COA will verify that a CBD product contains the advertised dosage and that its ingredients are also safe for consumption.
